Fall, Finances, and Fabulous Females

update Nov 03, 2019

Welcome, you beautiful MAWBsters, to the MAWBBlog! Well, it’s October. The warmth of summer is gone, the sweaters have come out of storage, and the cold rains have started. But have no fear, we are bringing you some exciting events, both daytime and evening, to keep you busy. There will be more on this below. With our membership creeping towards the 2000 mark, and limited space for all of the in-person events, it is hard for people to stay on top of all the MAWB activity taking place. Each month I recap the monthly Meet Ups, as well as some of the other in-person MAWB events, for all the members who are unable to attend. So, although the Facebook group is incredibly active (more about that later), sometimes life and other obligations make it hard to get out to the events. This blog is meant to keep everyone involved, virtually.

Showroom Show and Tell

meet up update Oct 18, 2019

Wow!  Wow, wow, wow!  I know I’m supposed to be the one with all the words, but the space MAWBster Heba Ahmed Malki has created with the Domilya Group showroom is leaving me a little speechless, it is so beautiful.  It is bright, airy, luxurious, exquisite, and breathtaking. Heba generously donated the use of the space for tonight’s MAWB October Evening Meetup, and it’s not just a one-stop-shop for all your renovation and design needs, but it is also a really great meeting space.  I have made use of the space myself, when I wanted to schedule a day of meetings with people who live west of Oakville and a meeting in Mississauga wouldn’t be convenient, and I am definitely planning on doing this again soon. I am so comfortable in the kitchen space, I could live there.  All I need to do is throw some cushions in one of those soaker tubs to sleep in. If you’re interested in having a temporary office for a day, I suggest you talk with...

Back to School, Back to Work

update Sep 18, 2019

Welcome, you beautiful MAWBsters, to the MAWBBlog!  It’s September, the kids are back in  school, and the weather is holding out and staying beautiful.  We may have wound down a bit for the summer, but we are back with our regularly scheduled programming.  And, may I add, bigger and better than ever! We had 71 business women register for this Meet Up with 65 in attendance. Not only are we continuing with our monthly Daytime Meetups, but Christine is hard at work organizing monthly Evening Meetups, lining up speakers and activities, and trying to find venues using the resources provided by fellow MAWBsters.  It is full-on collaboration, ladies! Stay tuned for more information. Here are dates we have book as of the September 18th Meet Up.

Each month I recap the monthly Meet Ups, as well as some of the other in-person MAWB events, for all the members who are unable to attend. So, although the Facebook group is incredibly active (more about that later),...

Be The ONE, Have BELLIEF in Yourself

Uncategorized Jun 28, 2019

Welcome, you beautiful MAWBsters, to this month’s MAWBBlog! Each month I recap the monthly Meet Ups, both morning and evening, as well as some of the other in-person MAWB events, for all the members who are unable to attend. While the Facebook group is incredibly active (more about that later), sometimes life and other obligations make it hard to get out to the events. This blog is meant to keep everyone involved, virtually.

Welcome To The MAWB!

The MAWB is Mississauga and Area Women in Business, a networking group for women entrepreneurs from Mississauga and the surrounding communities. Whether you’re a solopreneur, an employee of a larger organization looking to expand your network, or someone with an MLM as a side hustle or your main source of income, MAWBsters, as we refer to ourselves, come together to support and encourage each other, share ideas, and foster real relationships amongst members. This is not a Buy & Sell group, in fact that approach is actively...

Day 3: Starting the Day Off With a Bang

2019 retreat May 01, 2019

After Saturday night’s festivities, Sunday morning started with a bang! Alright, that’s totally not true, at least not for me. I’d love to say I jumped out of bed, ready to start my day with a morning meditation, presided over by Linsey Denham, but I can’t. I groggily made my way to the dining room with the promise of Eggs Benedict, home fries, and fruit salad. I was relieved to see I was not the only one dragging myself around. Thank goodness for strong tea, is all I have to say!

Workshops were also being offered on Sunday morning, from 9:30-11:30, before we met for some closing words from Christine, our fearless leader (I emphasize “fearless” here, because she had to be to take on this mammoth project of a Retreat Weekend), and our creative and capable Retreat Committee. The workshops offered on Sunday morning were:

  1. The Essentials for Building a Traffic System, with Anneline Breetzke
  2. How to Win at Life, with Sherri Lojzer
  3. Your Business! Your...

Your Business, Your Way, with Ritu Kohli-Sethi

2019 retreat May 01, 2019

Ritu (www.gtexecutivecentre.com) is managing The Greater Toronto Executive Centre, a business centre with two locations in Mississauga. Her workshop centred around sharing options on how to take your business out of the home, either full-time or part-time, and into a more professional environment. I work from my home, or out of my Starbucks “office”, because writing is a very solitary but mobile profession, but I don’t really want to be meeting my clients in my home. I don’t have a designated office space, and I live with 5 other people, so my home is most often not client-ready. Ritu was able to present business people like me a range of option for all budgets.

The Virtual Workplace

Your workplace is a key part of your business strategy. You must ask yourself some questions. Am I comfortable seeing clients at my home? Do you have a budget? Does my staff need to be in my space to do their job?

Office space can be represented in many different manners, from...

Cookie Decorating, with Sadaf Khalid Palijo

2019 retreat Apr 27, 2019

Sadaf (https://www.facebook.com/cakebysadaf/) is the MAWB’s resident baker. Anyone who has attended a Meetup has probably tried her cakes, which are just beautiful and taste divine. I have ordered cookies from her, decorated for both Christmas and Valentine’s Day, and her cookies are just as good as her cakes.

Usually iced sugar cookies are piped, but today, because of numbers and for the sake of convenience, we are dipping the cookies in the royal icing instead of using the pipe-and-flood method. In honour of our beautiful assistant, Violet, we are using a purple food colouring in our icing. Sadaf’s tip is to use a gel food colouring for better control and consistency. Using liquid food colouring can actually change the consistency of whatever you’re making.

When you dip your cookies in the icing, press it down firmly and try not to smudge it too much. Lift it straight up, and if you have any bad spots, gently angle and turn the cookie to fill them in. If...

The Brand Experience, with Natasha Wright

2019 retreat Apr 27, 2019

Natasha Wright (www.natashawright.ca) is a Web Performance Specialist. This means she is a Social Media Manager, an SEO specialist, and she can help you manage your brand personality on the internet.

Her presentation focussed on how branding consists of so many parts. It’s not just your name, logo, and colours, it’s also about the environment, your products and services, your customer’s experience, and who you are—how you portray yourself and how you’re perceived. These days the marketplace is more driven by the consumer due to social media. Feedback is more immediate, both praise and complaints, and part of your branding is how you react to this feedback.

Remember, as an entrepreneur you are your branding. You use your image to promote yourself on your business cards, and your Social Media. You use colours that reflect your personality and

Your business to project an image your customers can relate to. Natasha provides so much valuable information, I...

Bullet Journaling, Presented by Amber Dinda

2019 retreat Apr 27, 2019

Have you ever heard of Bullet Journaling? Have you ever wondered “What exactly is that?” This thought has crossed my mind many times. I always thought it was a way to manage your business, and I couldn’t figure out why you couldn’t just use a regular, pre-printed agenda. It just seems like a lot less work. I went into this workshop, facilitated by Amber Dinda of Par-T-Perfect event planners, with no expectations, simply because I had no idea what to expect.

It turns out that Bullet Journaling serves many purposes, and it is about so much more than organizing your day. It’s about organizing your life as a big picture, not just on a day-to-day basis; it’s about visually tracking in the long term things you want to keep track of for your life; it’s a creative outlet; it’s for setting goals and objectives and tracking progress; it is entirely personalized to what is important to you.

We were given these great notebooks as part of our...
